Arizona Lawmakers, Governor In Standoff Over Budget As End Of Fiscal Year Approaches

The main sticking point is a controversial 2.5% flat income tax that Gov. Doug Ducey is pushing for, which would permanently cut state revenues by billions and give a hefty tax break to the state’s wealthiest residents.
Republicans hold a slim majority in both chambers at the statehouse and couldn’t rally the votes to pass the budget last week. Instead, they decided to take a two-week break.
In response, the governor promptly vetoed 22 bills awaiting his signature in an attempt to push Republicans to get him a budget as soon as possible.
