Mexico has started vaccinating adults 18 and older in cities along the U.S.-Mexico border. It’s part of an effort to move ahead with plans to lift border travel restrictions implemented last March amid the pandemic. Shots started going into arms Thursday in six border cities in Baja California.

Mexico designated 1.35 million Johnson & Johnson vaccines sent from the United States for adults over 18 in 39 border cities.

The vaccinations are starting in Baja California. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says he hopes they will be wrapped up within 10 days.

Vaccinations will progress eastward along the border to 10 cities in Sonora next.

The vaccines sent from the U.S. will only cover about one third of the 18-40 cohort in Mexico’s border cities. Officials say Mexico will provide the additional doses, but have yet to announce which vaccine will be used and in which cities.
