An initiative to raise the minimum wage in Tucson to $15 per hour has enough qualifying signatures to make the city’s ballot in November.

According to a spokesperson for the group Tucson Fight for $15, which circulated petitions, there’s about 85,000 people living in Tucson who make less than that amount.

Campaign manager C.J. Boyd said if the proposal passes muster with voters this fall it will help reduce poverty by decreasing the strain on food banks for example.

Boyd pointed to the success of the campaign and said his group turned in nearly double the minimum amount of signatures required to put the measure on the ballot.

The initiative was organized by several nonprofit executives.
