Gov. Doug Ducey issued a declaration of emergency on Friday in response to flash flooding in Coconino County.

Ducey’s declaration opens the use of $200,000 worth of state funds to the county.

Flagstaff Public Works Director Andy Bertelson says the burn scar from 2019’s Museum Fire saw heavy rain.

“We received 2 inches of rain, I believe, at the highest impact, about an inch of rain in 15 minutes in that one location. That’s a real event in that location, and as a result, we saw that debris discharge in the system,” said Bertelson.

Some areas of Flagstaff reported rushing flood water about 1 foot deep, and the city issued shelter in place orders both Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, the threat of flash floods in the area may continue into next week.
