A major project from the Arizona Department Of Transportation is scheduled to begin ramping up soon. The purpose for widening of the I-10 is to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow as the Valley continues to experience rapid population growth.

The project will take place on 11 miles of the I-10 between Loop 202 and I-17 near Sky Harbor Airport.

Kim Noetzel is the deputy communication director for major projects at ADOT. She says much of the most complex work will happen on the Broadway curve, which is the section of I-10 between Baseline Road and 40th Street.

“By adding the new travel lanes and the new dual HOV lanes as a collector/distributor road system, we’ll be increasing capacity on I-10 by about 60%” she said.

The project will ramp up on Friday, July 23, the first weekend of a full westbound closure of the I-10. There will be at least 50 full, one-direction closures of the highways in the Broadway curve area during nights and weekends through 2024 with planned detours for travelers.

The total project cost is $776 million.
