On Friday, Republic columnist Abe Kwok responded to a new pilot program from the city of Phoenix’s Parks and Recreation Board to close select public hiking trails when the heat gets extreme.
Firefighters have been responding to a number of emergency calls to rescue hikers downed by the heat, and the firefighters' union argues it’s getting dangerous for the responders as well. Two firefighters ended up in the hospital after making multiple rescues in a day.
Kwok argues closing the trails doesn’t help anyone.
