The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission will begin its first round of statewide public hearings on Friday in Pinal County.

The bipartisan commission arose out of the successful passage of Proposition 106 in 2000 and is tasked with redrawing congressional and legislative districts for the state.

According to its mission statement, the Commission is tasked with making sure districts are roughly equal in population, adhere to the federal Voting Rights Act, and are competitive.

The hearings run through Aug. 9 in a variety of locations around the state.
