The city of Glendale is working with community organizations to distribute grant funding to people experiencing homelessness. 

Glendale is using $1.2 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help families or individuals who are temporarily homeless but could sustain permanent housing with some financial assistance.

Matthew Hess, the city of Glendale’s revitalization administrator, says they are targeting people who are considered “housing ready.”

“Basically that means those folks do not require substantial amounts of case management," Hess said. "They don’t have really serious mental health issues or drug dependency, that sort of thing.”

Hess says it's part of a larger strategy to reduce homelessness in Glendale as the city struggles with high occupancy rates and low available housing stock.

Eligible tenants must still pay 30% of their income. The vouchers are for 12 months with an option to renew for another year.
