Police officers testified on Capitol Hill on Tuesday about violent and at times racially-fueled attacks by pro-Trump insurrectionists on Jan. 6. 

Blocks away, Republican congressmen from Arizona took part in a news conference asking if suspected rioters who remain jailed are being treated fairly.

Reps. Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs were among a group of Republican lawmakers who spoke outside the Justice Department.

They went there seeking all government evidence against people held on suspicion of crimes during the insurrection, but the group of Trump loyalists were blocked from the building lobby.

Gosar said that hundreds of jailed suspects have spent months separated from their families. 

“These are not unruly or dangerous violent criminals. These are political prisoners who are now being persecuted and bearing the pain of unjust suffering,” he said.

Protesters, who included someone repeatedly blowing a whistle, eventually forced the group of GOP House members to end their news conference early.
