New data out Thursday shows that COVID-19 was the top cause of death in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, last year.

Sonora is one of nine Mexican states where the coronavirus killed more people than any other cause of death in 2020, according to a new report from the Mexico’s national statistics and geography institute (INEGI).

The virus was the cause of more than 6,000 of the nearly 29,000 deaths in Sonora, which had the fourth highest rate of COVID-19 deaths in Mexico’s 32 states. Heart disease was the state’s second most common killer.

Nationwide, the coronavirus was the second most common cause of death, after heart disease. Often called excess deaths, nearly 340,000 more people died across the country in 2020 than the previous year.
