Chandler is boosting incentives to get more landlords to welcome lower-income renters.

Chandler is offering landlords $1,000 for each property rented to a family using Housing Choice vouchers, formerly known as Section 8.

Under the program, renters pay at least 30% of their monthly income toward rent while the city — using federal funds — pays the rest.

Landlords with houses, apartments and duplexes in Chandler are eligible as long as the property meets federal standards. Previously, Chandler offered a $400 incentive.

“It is becoming increasingly difficult to find low- to moderate-income housing within city limits and we’re hopeful with this enhanced program, more landlords will see the benefits of renting to our qualified families,” Amy Jacobson, Chandler housing and redevelopment manager, said in a statement.

In August 2020, Phoenix launched its own program, offering landlords $500 for each property rented for 12 months. The city set aside $500,000 in federal coronavirus relief funds to pay landlords. As of July 30, 2021, Phoenix said $48,500 remained for the incentive program.
