The requirement that all students and staff wear masks inside Phoenix Union High School buildings will stand — at least for now.

On Aug. 4, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge did not issue a temporary restraining order against the mandate but did schedule oral arguments for next week in a lawsuit brought by a high school science teacher.

The district is one of a growing number that are requiring their students and staff to mask up, despite a provision in one of the recently-approved state budget bills that prohibits districts from requiring masks.

In addition to Phoenix Union, the Tucson Unified School District, Phoenix Elementary, Roosevelt, Osborn and Washington elementary school districts are among those that have instituted mask requirements.
