Second doses for younger border residents of Sonora are set to start this weekend.

Eighteen- to 39-year-old residents of Nogales, Agua Prieta and other northern Sonora communities got their first doses of the Pfizer vaccine in early July, and now their second is coming just over a month later, according to federal official Jorge Taddei.

The border vaccination effort is intended in part to speed the easing of northbound crossing restrictions, in place now for nearly a year and a half. While that effort has successfully gotten many adult border residents to at least one dose, an opening or easing is not likely this month.

Though separate from the specific border vaccination effort, Nogales residents between 40- and 49-years-old are expected to receive their second doses of AstraZeneca later in August.
