For the first time, three specialty license plates have generated more than $1 million in annual revenue, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Sales were tallied for the 2020-21 fiscal year, from July 2020 to June 2021, and three plates topped the list — those honoring veterans, first responders and the Arizona Cardinals.

The plates program, which was established in 1989, collectively earned almost $11 million in revenue last fiscal year.

Almost $2 million was raised from purchases of the veterans specialty plate alone; proceeds will benefit programs from the state's Department of Veterans’ Services.

“Specialty plates are a great way for Arizonans to show off their interests, experiences, sports fandom or school pride,” Motor Vehicle Division Director Eric Jorgensen said in a press release Wednesday. “Even better, every person who requests a specialty plate is raising money for charities in Arizona.”

The Grand Canyon State currently features 74 specialty license plates that support numerous charities and organizations. ADOT says more plate options will be added later this year.

Specialty plates usually cost $25, $17 of which goes to the benefiting organization.
