COVID-19 cases continue to climb in Arizona and the city of Tempe has set an ambitious goal to get 75% of residents vaccinated by Labor Day. 

Tempe city data shows just 57% of the city's residents 12 and older have had at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. 74% of residents of the 85284 ZIP code in the southern part of the city are already vaccinated, but the vaccination rates in each of the city's other three ZIP codes remain below 60%. 

Tempe Fire Medical Rescue assistant chief Andrea Glass said in a Tuesday Facebook Live town hall event that the rates are concerning as the highly infectious delta variant spreads. She said the city wants to get back to festivals, concerts and holiday celebrations this fall and winter.

“Now is the time to get the vaccination so that when the special events do come, you’re better protected and you’re protecting those around you," Glass said. 

The city is hosting several pop-up vaccination clinics through the end of the month.
