The company that owns the Westgate Entertainment District says it supports Glendale’s decision to not renew the Arizona Coyotes’ lease of Gila River Arena.

The city manager says the choice to show pro hockey the door lines up neatly with what’s best long term for neighboring Westgate.

The Coyotes play about 40 home games a year.

Still, Glendale has to black out 200 days for the NHL every fall, and the upcoming season schedule doesn’t come out until spring.

It’s hard for the city-owned arena to book pro hockey’s unchosen dates with events like concerts, pro bull riding and the UFC.

Breaking up with the Coyotes in 2022 is business, not personal.

“This really 100% revolved around our assessment that we can do better without the team,” said Kevin Phelps, Glendale city manager.

Westgate, owned by YAM Properties and GoDaddy founder Bob Parsons, released a statement.

“The city of Glendale has been a great partner for us and we support its decisions regarding the arena,” said Dan Dahl, director of real estate for YAM Properties. “With a diverse mix of dining, shopping and entertainment options, Westgate will continue to hold its own as a thriving entertainment hub for the West Valley.”
