Restrictions on northbound border crossings from Mexico remain in effect, but the number of people crossing continues to climb.

Those restrictions on nonessential northbound crossings were most recently extended through Sept. 21, when they will complete a full year and a half since they started last spring. But despite those regular extensions, pedestrian and car passenger crossing numbers at major ports continue to rebound from historic lows that came in the wake of the restrictions, federal data show.

In some cities they even appear to be approaching pre-pandemic crossing levels. In San Luis in June, the most recent month available, roughly 365,000 car passengers crossed into the U.S., more than 90% of the same figure from two years prior.

Similarly, the 206,000 pedestrians who crossed into Nogales in June were 91% of the number seen in June 2019.
