Nonprofit Aims To Shield Arizona Renters From Flurry Of Evictions As Moratorium Ends
Download mp3 (11.2 MB)On Aug. 26, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a national eviction moratorium that has been providing cover for nearly 20% of America’s renters.
The court ruled the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not have the authority to enact such a moratorium, as it has for 18 months as the COVID-19 pandemic has swept the nation.
In Arizona, it’s estimated that more than a quarter-of-a-million renters are behind on their payments, and many landlords are also feeling the pinch.
Nearly $500 million in federal emergency rental assistance has been distributed to Arizona over the past year, but state officials have been slow to dole out the relief.
Community Legal Services provides legal aid for residents throughout central and western Arizona, and they are also preparing to protect renters from a potential onslaught of evictions.
Pamela Bridge is director of litigation and advocacy for Community Legal Services, and The Show spoke with her about the situation, beginning with her reaction to this announcement.
