Phoenix Hosts 102nd National American Legion Convention
Phoenix is hosting the 102nd National Convention of the American Legion and this year’s event takes on special meaning.
It marks the last time veterans from around the county will likely see the original site of Arizona’s oldest Legion Post. Luke-Greenway American Legion Post 1 was among three posts chartered in the United States on the same day in 1919 — just months before the first national convention.
In late August, the Phoenix council sold the city-owned parcel to a developer that plans mixed-income housing with preference to veterans, along with space for veterans support services.
Post 1 is located at Seventh Avenue and Polk Street, just a mile away from the Phoenix Convention Center, where more than 4,000 people from the United States, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines are meeting.
The convention runs from Aug. 27–Sept. 2. It is the second national American Legion Convention to be held in Phoenix, the first in 2008.
