ASU Football Game Brings COVID-19 Concerns
Arizona State University football is back with its largest crowd in six years on Thursday night. Sun Devil Stadium was full of students excited to see a football game in person.
However, there was no social distancing and no mask requirement at the game, making COVID-19 easier to transmit from student to student.
Dr. Sam Durrani, a surgeon at an Arizona hospital, says he understands how fans feel about football, but he says “your behaviors can negatively affect others.”
“We have patients that need heart surgery and colon cancer surgery. Those are considered elective surgeries and if we don’t have bed availability in the hospital to recover from, it delays the care. That’s the big problem with COVID and the health care system is that we can’t deliver care to everybody who needs it," said Durrani.
Durrani says he fears football games and other large gatherings like them have the potential to become superspreader events.
