Sonora’s incoming governor has announced the appointees to important cabinet positions. A historic number of those posts will be held by women.

With his inauguration less than a week away, Gov.-elect Alfonso Durazo this week tapped a number of well-known politicians to head 11 high-level government positions in Sonora — among them five women who will be at the helm of the departments of labor, agriculture, social and family development, and tourism.

“We have looked for the best Sonorans available to do the work,” Durazo said during a press conference Monday.

But some are touting a cabinet nearly evenly divided between men and women as a historic move for a Sonoran governor. More women will be in leadership positions in his government than in any previous administration, including that of his predecessor Claudia Pavlovich — the first woman to serve as governor in Sonora.
