One in every 500 Americans has now died from COVID-19. But the per capita death rate in Arizona is more than 30% higher than the national average.
Arizona passed the grim milestone of one in 500 people dead back in February as the state was emerging from a major wave of cases and hospitalizations. Seven months later, Arizona has reported more than 19,000 total COVID-19 fatalities, bringing the rate of death in the state to one in every 375. The state’s pandemic death rate is seventh-highest in the nation, according to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation.
Medical experts believe official COVID-19 death totals are likely undercounts.
Arizona is currently averaging about 26 deaths per day from the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The daily average appears to be trending downward.
