State health officials added 1,959 new coronavirus cases and, as usual on a Monday, no more deaths to its daily Arizona dashboard Sept. 27.

Sometime this week, though, the state could reach another dubious milestone as it nears 20,000 COVID-19-related deaths since the pandemic began.

Hospitalizations continue a steady decline, yet ICUs around the state remain at 93% capacity overall.

Another 11,000 vaccine doses were reported Sept. 26, meaning 51% of eligible Arizonans are fully vaccinated — still about 5% lower than the national average.

And this week is an important one for parents, teachers, students and staff in schools around the state.

The law banning mask mandates is set to take effect on Wednesday, Sept. 29. This has some in our community alarmed as COVID-19 continues to move through student populations.

At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a new study on the effectiveness of mask wearing in schools.

Dr. Theresa Cullen, Pima County’s health director, is one of the co-authors.

The Show caught up with her for an update on all of the latest when it comes to COVID-19 in Arizona. The conversation began with case trends here.
