New Biden deportation rules limit arrests and immigrant deportations
The Biden administration has announced new guidelines that require immigration agents to only go after people who crossed the border without permission recently or who pose a threat to the public’s safety.
The new guidelines come as the administration faces bipartisan backlash for how it’s handled deportations. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas laid out some specifics Thursday on who would be targeted. Specifically, people who crossed the border without permission after Nov. 1, 2020, or for committing what he called serious criminal activity.
Advocacy groups for immigrant rights are skeptical of details within the new policy.
"How agents are trained on this memo, how it’s implemented and how they’re held accountable when they violate it is going to be crucial to make sure it’s a success," said Jacinta Gonzalez of Mijente.
The new rules start Nov. 29.
