A major interstate in northern Sonora has again been the site of a deadly shootout.

Early Monday morning, Sonoran authorities found the bodies of five people, victims of an apparent shootout along the state’s most important thoroughfare between Santa Ana and Benjamin Hill. Two more survived and had gunshot wounds, according to a release from the state attorney’s office.

Authorities also found a burned-out pickup truck with scrap metal in the back, and on one of the bodies a message warning that similar violence would be meted out to those stealing such materials.

On several occasions the major highway in northern Sonora has been a site of extreme violence, which has previously shut down the critical thoroughfare and claimed the life of a former mayor, among others.
