Sen. Mark Kelly testified last week on the importance of extending federal funding for the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area.

Yuma was once the site of a military supply depot and Arizona's first territorial prison.

Both became state parks, but budget cuts threatened their future a little over a decade ago.

Yuma took over their management through a heritage site, but federal funding for the program will expire this year.

Kelly has introduced legislation to extend it through 2036.
