For the first time in months, neighboring Sonora is now considered "low risk" on the federal coronavirus scale.

It was May that Sonora was last at green on the federal semáforo, or traffic light system. Starting Monday, it’s now one of 20 Mexican states with that distinction, well over half of the country’s 32 states. The transition comes as new confirmed cases continue falling in Sonora and across Mexico.

Sonora maintains its own municipality-level risk map, the new version of which shows that the capital and largest city Hermosillo is now also low risk. Several other major cities, like Nogales, Cajeme, home to Ciudad Obregon, and Guaymas, home to the popular beach resort of San Carlos, remain at moderate risk.
