Late last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an urgent health advisory aimed at pregnant people saying, essentially, one thing: Please, get vaccinated. That’s because people who are pregnant are both at higher risk of serious complications from COVID-19 — and they are less likely to be vaccinated.

CDC data shows just one quarter of pregnant people in the U.S. had received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine as of mid-October; 200 pregnant people have died as a result of the virus.

But the message from health authorities on whether or not they should get the vaccine has not always been consistent — and no one who was pregnant was included in the early clinical trials for the vaccines.
