Monsoon storms this summer damaged homes and property in Gila County. Now the county has received federal and state funding to help prevent future flooding.

The $8 million grant will go toward efforts to clean out waterways.

The Gila County Board of Supervisors Chairman Tim Humphrey says the county hired contractors to remove debris and sediment that could potentially block the waterways. This helps to prevent future flooding after last monsoon season caused floods that wreaked havoc.

“There was homes lost, there was mobile homes lost. There was a mobile home park that it moved mobile homes hundreds of feet away from where they were. We had homes that had three feet of mud,” said Humphrey.

These new funds will go toward making sure homes and properties within the county don’t get hit as hard. The work is expected to be completed by next monsoon season.
