U.S. 60 improvements near Show Low will give drivers more room
The Arizona Department of Transportation has started a new project along U.S. 60 to improve vehicle safety and driver recovery. The new project will provide vehicles that leave the roadway a safe place to regain control or avoid an accident.
The project will extend 39 miles along the highway from Salt River Canyon to the city of Show Low. Drivers will have more space to act accordingly during wildlife crossings and ice-related incidents during the winter months.
Ryan Harding is the ADOT spokesman and shared what the project will do for drivers.
“If a vehicle leaves a roadway for any reason, there is a space there that will hopefully give the driver enough time to come to a stop or regain control of their vehicle,” he said.
Starting on Nov. 8, crews will remove trees and vegetation 30 feet from the road side and 5 feet behind guardrails. The trees removed will be reused and given to members of the White Mountain Apache Tribe, The National Forest Service and the city of Show Low.
