The Mexican government is set to apologize to the family of a disappeared Sonoran reporter.

José Alfredo Jiménez Mota was a reporter for the Sonoran newspaper El Imparcial when he went missing in 2005. Nearly 17 years later, no one has been held responsible for his disappearance, and no remains have ever been found. But on Wednesday afternoon in his home city of Empalme, representatives of the Mexican government will formally offer his family an apology.

Jose Alfredo Jimenez Hernandez, the reporter’s father, said he hopes that his son’s body will eventually be found and is proud that his work as a reporter will be recognized at the event.

But he also said the country needs to “harden its laws” and ensure accountability for those who attack reporters.

“Because they’re the people who inform us about the real facts in society,” he said.
