The Maricopa County Health Department is a couple weeks into a pilot program in a Phoenix school district. The goal is to see if unvaccinated kids exposed to COVID-19 can remain in school, following certain protocols.

Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine with the county health department. She says as long as those in the study continue to test negative and wear masks, they can remain in school.

"This is something that everyone is interested in across the country and that the CDC is working with five different locations to test something similar," Sunenshine said.

Sunenshine believes the virus may become “endemic” and programs like this one could be implemented in order to help live with the virus.

After the data is gathered, the health department will analyze and present it to the board of supervisors for final recommendations, with the hope of taking the program county-wide.
