The desert is a mysterious place full of stories, real and otherwise, some of the darkest kind and others that are simply strange and seem nearly impossible. And those tales rarely err on the side of something fun and optimistic, because for many, the desert embodies scariness.

Ken Layne sees it very differently, and that has helped him carve out a unique second career with his radio show and podcast Desert Oracle, which has also become a book of the same name. Layne will be spinning his desert tales Dec. 15 at the Mesa Arts Center.

Before that, The Show spoke with him to learn about what started his fascination with the desert.
