In neighboring Sonora, Mexico, a new hotline is aimed at assisting victims of domestic violence.

Mireya Scarone, head of the Sonoran Women's Institute, said the Línea Naranja, or orange line, will be open 24/7 for women and girls to report domestic violence, sexual assault, harassment or other forms of violence and receive support and legal advice.

Sonoran Governor Alfonso Durazo added that domestic violence reports are one of the most common types of 911 calls in the state, with more than 2,500 so far this month.

Violence against women continues to be a major issue in Sonora, and across Mexico. From January to November there were 37 reported femicides, or murders of women because of their gender — a 32% increase over the same period last year. Nationwide, there were 922 femicides through November 2021.
