More than 25,000 Arizonans have now died from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report Arizona’s per capita death rate is second-highest among states.

Nearly 2,000 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in Arizona just in the last month. Public health experts believe the worst of Arizona’s omicron wave is yet to come.

The highly infectious variant is driving cases to record-high levels in the state. Daily death tolls are climbing too, but for now, the average number of daily fatalities is still much lower than it was during last winter’s surge.
