Less than a week after one Tijuana reporter was murdered, a second has been killed.

Early Sunday evening, Lourdes Maldonado Lopez was shot in her car near home in Tijuana, according to a news report from Punto Norte. That came less than a week after photojournalist Margarito Martinez Esquivel was gunned down in the same city.

In March 2019, Maldonado was at President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s daily press conference and asked for his help in an ongoing labor dispute, which she said made her “fear for my life.”

The Mexican press freedom group Article 19 said Sunday that Maldonado was being helped by a state-level journalist protection program. They also noted that she was the third reporter to be killed so far this year in Mexico, considered to be one of the most dangerous worldwide for journalists.
