There are some signs that the aggressive omicron wave in Mexico could be losing steam.

After several weeks of explosive growth, the omicron-driven surge appears to be slowing, said Dr. Hugo Lopez-Gatell, head of Mexico’s COVID-19 response. The most recent week did show an increase over the previous week, but a much more modest one.

“This, I insist, should be taken with caution,” he said of that data. But if the trend continues, it could herald a positive change, he added

In Sonora, Arizona’s neighbor to the south, data closely tracked by analyst Luis Armando Moreno show a similar deceleration. Deaths in the state over the last three weeks are trending more steadily upward, and totaled 93 last week.
