Federal prosecutors are looking at bogus 2020 election documents
Download mp3 (1.5 MB)Records obtained by a nonpartisan watchdog show 11 people signed a fake Electoral College certificate falsely claiming that former President Donald Trump won Arizona in 2020.
A deputy U.S. attorney general said prosecutors are reviewing bogus documents sent to the National Archives from a handful of states.
Among the signatures on the fake Arizona certification are state Republican Party chair Kelli Ward, state GOP lawmaker Jake Hoffman and far-right U.S. Senate candidate Jim Lamon.
Investigating what exactly happened in December 2020 is the right move by prosecutors, said Paul Charlton, former U.S. attorney for Arizona.
"The protection of our Republic, and the importance of making sure that these elections ensure the peaceful transfer of power, is critical to the survival of our country,” he said.
Charlton also said the signers of the fake certifications could be accused of a felony for making a false statement to the government, if the Feds conclude they were done on purpose.
