Sonoran authorities are investigating the apparent murder of a former state congressman.

Daniel Palafox, who represented the coastal city of Guaymas for a portion of the last state Legislature, was reported missing by family members at the end of January. His abandoned body was found late last week on a highway between Guaymas and Empalme, with evidence of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the state attorney’s office.

That office says that it’s pursuing several lines of investigation, including the possible role of organized crime. During his short time in the Legislature, Palafox discussed the widespread problem of forced disappearances in the state, according to media reports.
