Military needs to improve work on diversity and inclusion, expert says

The U.S. military has faced growing challenges, but many of those are occurring internally rather than with external adversaries.
During the Trump administration, there was a concerted effort to exclude transgender people from serving. Increasing concerns also emerged when it came to so-called extremists in the ranks — soldiers who were displaying more loyalty to political perspectives than to the aims and goals of military service.
How can those trends change, and how can additional progress be made?
Bishop Garrison is senior advisor to the secretary of defense for human capital and diversity, equity and inclusion. He’ll be speaking Feb. 16 at Arizona State University as part of the Center on the Future of War speaker series.
