The Department of Homeland Security says the last group of Afghans housed at a military base in Wisconsin departed this week, marking the closure of seven out of eight so-called safe haven locations set up at military bases across the U.S.

More than 76,000 Afghans were brought to the U.S. as part of Operation Allies Welcome evacuation last August. The last of more than 12,500 evacuees living at Fort McCoy departed Tuesday.

After going through security vetting, health checks and vaccinations, evacuees leave military bases and head for resettlement cities across the country, including Phoenix and Tucson.

DHS said more than 74,000 Afghans have taken that step so far, including the last group who left Fort McCoy. Just one safe haven location in New Jersey continues to house Afghans now.

Though the majority of Afghans evacuated last August are now in U.S. resettlement cities, many are still waiting to reunite with family members who are stuck  in Afghanistan or in another country.
