Municipal police in Hermosillo have 25 new electric motorcycles, part of a plan to tackle climate change in the hot Sonoran city.

Government leaders in Hermosillo, the capital of neighboring Sonora, say they want to tackle the causes and effects of climate change in the extremely hot city. One of those efforts is replacing police patrols cars with electric vehicles.

Municipal police in Hermosillo now have 25 new electric motorcycles — an investment that cost the city about $150,000.

But the mayor and others say it’s worth the cost to reduce emissions, and that the motorcycles provide other benefits as well — like reducing fuel and maintenance costs, and allowing police to more easily patrol the entire city.

The 25 motorcycles are the first stage of a plan to replace existing patrol cars with more than 200 new electric vehicles.

The motorcycles are fully electric and can travel about 75 miles when charged. Their maximum speed is just more than 60 mph, according to officials.
