Sonora’s governor is continuing to push for the moving of a binational train line that runs through both Nogales, Sonora and Arizona.

Governor Alfonso Durazo recently met with US Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar, and said he formally presented the proposed new route for the train line, which currently runs through the downtowns of the twin border cities.

“I’ve said it before, it’s an extremely complicated process,” Durazo said of the estimated $350 million project.

Durazo said that US authorities still need to sign off on a new connection on the US side, and that the Mexican president’s support of the project is contingent on it being completed by December 2023.

Durazo says his government also has plans to present the proposal to Arizona authorities, as well as to Union Pacific, which owns the line north of the border. Union Pacific previously said it has no plans to move the track “on its own.”
