Arizona is the first state to get driver’s licenses and IDs in Apple Wallet
Arizona residents are now the first people in the United States who can get their driver’s licenses and IDs in Apple Wallet.
Apple announced Wednesday that users can now add their IDs to an iPhone or Apple Watch for use at some Transportation Security Administration security checkpoints in Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. The devices must be an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 15.4, and Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 8.4 or later.
Arizonans who add their ID will be able to tap their iPhone or Apple Watch at identity readers. If all goes right, this means users will not need to hand over their device to show identification. TSA agents will take a picture when scanning, however.
The Arizona Department of Transportation says this is an attempt to reduce wait times and provide more digital options for customers.
In an effort to maintain security, Apple says users can review information needed before it is shared.
“We’re thrilled to bring the first driver’s license and state ID in Wallet to Arizona today, and provide Arizonans with an easy, secure, and private way to present their ID when traveling, through just a tap of their iPhone or Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet in a press release Wednesday.
The company says Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio and the territory of Puerto Rico will be next to get the technology.
