Arizona’s GOP delegation to Congress has accused the Democrat-controlled executive branch of an assault on gun rights.

The quartet is among dozens of lawmakers asking the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to answer questions about homemade silencers before April 2.

The Justice Department, which houses the ATF, wants to add legal definitions for silencers and other gun parts to decades old federal law.

The proposal from last year says existing definitions without modern terminology hurt public safety.

A letter signed by all Arizona Republicans in Congress asks why the ATF denied some peoples’ applications to make their own gun silencers. It also questions if the denials are due to a policy change in how ATF regulates self-made silencers.

Final action on the Justice Department proposal is expected by June.
