A nurse anesthetist at Valleywise Health in Phoenix is native to Ukraine, and keeping a close eye on the conflict.

In an interview provided by Valleywise, Yelena Krueger says she watches Ukrainian news broadcasts every day.

“Each morning I wake up, I watch local news, Ukrainian news live streams, and try to check my phone and try to text my family to make sure that they’re OK. And of course when you don’t hear from one of them, you try to start a chain, like who do I call next,” said Krueger.

Krueger’s family members, including her father, are still in Ukraine, and she says she is struggling with the uncertainty that comes with war.

“Part of me, feeling helpless, part of me feeling guilty that I’m here waking up to blue skies everyday and trying to plan my day, and not knowing what will happen in a split second,” said Krueger.

She says her friends and coworkers have been providing moral support to her and financial support to Ukraine during these difficult times.
