State Sen. Kelly Townsend has issued a subpoena to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to provide material related to the 2020 election and appear at a hearing for the state’s Senate Government Committee.

But Board of Supervisors chairman Bill Gates says the board does not plan on attending.

Gates said in a letter that the members of the board “do not feel the need to attend” the hearing but are working on providing the subpoenaed information as soon as possible.

Gates says the delay of information stems from the County Recorder’s Office dealing with upcoming midterm elections, and the short timespan between Townsend’s records request, made March 9, and the subpoena, issued March 21.

Townsend responded to Gates’ letter by thanking him for the reply but still requesting a member of the board for Monday’s hearing.

The letter outlines that Gates plans to have the county’s attorney, Ed Novak, at the meeting in the board’s place.
