Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo says local, state and federal authorities are working together to ensure a safe and enjoyable Holy Week, which falls in mid-April this year.

It’s often one of the heaviest weeks of tourism for Sonora, and this year will likely proceed with few — if any — pandemic restrictions.

Durazo says that there will be special emphasis on ensuring that police forces do not extort or otherwise take advantage of visitors.

“We’re going to work on that, and we’re not going to permit abuses,” he said in a recent release.

Recent polling shows that police bribing of motorists is extremely common across Mexico.
