A new poll finds that Arizonans are not optimistic about the future of gas prices in the state. 

Phoenix-based OH Predictive Insights surveyed Arizonans on how they view the surging gas prices in their state. According to the AZPOP poll, 4 in 5 residents expect prices to be higher next month than they are now. In contrast, only 15% believe they will be the same or lower.

Aldo Vazquez with AAA Arizona says high gas prices in the western states is not a new phenomenon.

"We just typically see these higher prices because of transportation costs, and mostly because there are fewer pipelines on the West coast than there are on the East coast," Vazquez said. The poll also indicates that over half of Arizonans expect gas prices to be higher next year than they are now. 

Mike Noble is chief of research at OH Predictive Insights. He says the data from the poll could reflect how Arizonans vote in November.

“With the height of election season quickly approaching, it is imperative that government leaders address concerns that are top of mind for voters, or risk being taken to the cleaners at the ballot box," Noble said.

According to AAA, gas prices per gallon in Arizona are 45 cents higher than the national average.
