From the earliest stages of his 2016 campaign to his four years in the White House, Donald Trump used rhetoric and implemented policies that critics saw as not only anti-immigrant but inhumane. And although President Joe Biden has acted to reverse some of his predecessor's actions, concerns remain about how immigrants, especially those crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, are perceived.

In a recent essay for Zocalo Public Square, Ali Noorani of the National Immigration Forum argues that one of the problems is the way stories of border crossers are being told. He believes a balance between security and compassion is needed.

The Show spoke with him and began the conversation by asking how much of the narrative is driven by which administration or party is in power.
